Family Banking
The Pros
Families who choose to bank their childs cord blood stem cells privately usually do so because they feel it offers them an extra security precaution, and they also provide a perfect match for the child from whom they are collected; eliminating the process of a matching donor and the risks of rejection.
Whats more, banked cells provide a one-in-four match for siblings, an important factor for most women as Government statistics show 59% of all pregnant women already have one or more children in the family. These cells can be used not only to treat babies and their mothers, but quite possibly family members, as well.
While stem cells are being used today to treat over 70 life-threatening diseases, a large amount of funding is being put into research to develop treatments for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, muscular dystrophy, as well as for ways to regenerate and repair damaged tissue, due to aging.
A family does not have to live in the community where their babys cord blood stem cells are stored when banking privately, and despite having enrollment fees and annual storage fees, payment plans are offered by many of the reputable private banks.
The Cons
The one drawback, is that there are costs involved to bank privately. Generally, there are one-time enrollment fees along with annual storage fees.
